Unidentified aeroplanes, collision at Sherburn in Elmet aerodrome.
On Saturday, 24th July 1926 the Yorkshire Aeroplane Club organised and ran their first air pageant and inter-club competion, the event was held at their Sherburn in Elmet aerodrome site with various flying events taking place around the area. The Yorkshire, Lancashire and Newcastle Aeroplane Clubs all entered as well as a number of private aeroplane owners. During the event a competition billed as the "Inter-Club Relay Race" a ground collision occurred between two of the aeroplanes. This relay race appears to have involved pilots flying their own club aeroplanes, landing and then running to other aeroplanes and flying them. Unfortunately the information relating to this incident has only been found in newspaper reports and they do not go into detail. It appears that the lady pilot, Mrs Elliot-Lynn, in one aeroplane taxied into an aeroplane owned by the Lancashire Flying Club and piloted by Mr Scholes. Mr Scholes' aeroplane sustained a crumpled wing which saw it temporarily out of action but Mrs Elliot-Lynn's aeroplane appears to have escaped damage and she completed the race.
What aeroplanes the Lancashire Aero Club brought to this meeting I have yet to learn.
Pilot - Mr H J Scholes. Lancashire Aero Club.
