Unidentified aeroplane, forced landing near Humbleton.

On Tuesday, 17th September 1929 this aeroplane was being flown from Grantham to Catfoss when the aeroplane caught fire in the air over the East Riding of Yorkshire. The passenger noticed that luggage that was being carried on an external luggage rack slipped and came to rest on an exhaust pipe, the heat generated caused smoke and then flames develop. At around 6.30hrs the aeroplane was force landed in a field at Humbleton, near Aldborough without further damage. The fire damage that occurred near the tail of the aeroplane was repaired over the following hours and the during the next morning it was flown to Catfoss.

Given that the newspaper reports for this incident state that the aeroplane was from Grantham then the RAF unit that was based there was No.3 F.T.S. but exactly what the aeroplane was I am unsure. Aeroplanes with external luggage racks certainly never caught on into the jet-age.

Pilot - F/O Mason.

Passenger - Dr Edwards.

The passenger may have been a T.A.Edwards who was a medical officer at Catfoss at this period, this we know because a newspaper report for October 1929 states that he appeared in court for unpaid rent at a property in Bridlington.
