Unidentified Avro aeroplane in the Stainmore area.

On 14th March 1923 this civilian operated aeroplane set out from Carlisle for a long flight down to London when it was landed in the Brough area where the the three male occupants spent the night. The reason behind the long flight is not known. During the afternoon of 15th March 1923 it took off from Brough but soon after leaving the ground the engine began to fail. It was force landed on a hillside in the area of Stainmore but unfortunately overturned causing injuries to two of the men on board. The aircraft was later dismantled on site and transported to Kirby Stephen to be taken by rail for possible repair. A newspaper report sourced states that it was an Avro aircraft but does not identify which type.

Exactly where this incident is not known nor are any other details. Based on it taking off from Brough and heading south, and with it being taken to Kirby Stephen after the crash it would seem most likely to have crashed on land much further south than Stainmore. Almost certainly on the lower rolling fields rather than the moorland above and almost certainly not in what was then Yorkshire.
