During the first week of March 1918 Rotherham held a fundraising "Destroyer Week" to encourage the public in purchasing National War Bonds that would go to the war effort, and specifically toward the Royal Navy. Local newspapers state that by 9th March it had raised a significant figure. During the week a number of events were held and this included a public gathering at Clifton Park, during which an aeroplane was flown over and dropped advertising leaflets. Some form of flying accident occurred but what or where is unclear.
