Sopwith 1F1 Camel D1816 near Beverley.

During the morning of 5th June 1918 this No.72 Training Squadron aeroplane was flown on a training exercise in the Beverley area and during which the pilot put the aeroplane into a spin. He did not recover the aeroplane from the spin and it crashed. The pilot was seriously injured and was admitted to Hull Royal Infirmary.

Walter Campbell was born on 10th July 1893. His family were from the Ushaw Moor, Durham and as a young man worked as a mine surveyor. He appears to have enlisted into the Royal Flying Corps in September 1917 and received a commission on 13th December 1917. He was posted to No.41 Training Squadron on 7th January 1918 and then to No.72 Training Squadron on 4th February 1918. He then transferred to the RAF when it formed on 1st April and the RFC folded. He was admitted to various hospitals after the crash on 5th June 1918 and never returned to active service, he relinquished his commission on grounds of ill health on 25th January 1919.
