Airco DH.9 D1745 near Stockton on Tees.

At 19.15hrs on 13th September 1918 the pilot of this aeroplane became lost while flying in failing light conditions so attempted to make a forced landing near Stockton on Tees but it struck a tree and crashed. The pilot sustained minor injuries. This incident probably in Durham but as the exact crash location is not known I have created a webpage, it may require deletion from this website once information comes to light that gives a more accurate location. The pilot and aeroplane were part of No.49 Training Depot Station, based at Catterick.

Pilot - Flt Cadet Henry George Pounds RAF. Slightly injured.

Henry Pounds was born on 1897 and initially served in the army. He switched to the RFC around the start of 1918 and transferred to the RAF when it formed in April 1918. He left 49 TDS in November 1918 and went to 52 TDS. After February 1919 his service file lists nothing, suggesting he then was placed on the Unemployed List but it does not specifically state this.

Back to yearly selection.
