Airco DH.6 C5212 at Owthorne.

On 13th September 1918 this 251 Squadron aeroplane was being flown in the Withernsea area and was just 100 feet above the ground when the pilot made a climbing turn. The flying speed decreased causing it to stall and sideslip into the ground at Owthorne at 16.15hrs. Owthorne is just north of Withernsea. The aeroplane was based at Atwick aerodrome. The pilot sustained injuries and was initially admitted to hospital in Hull.

Ralph Jenkinson was born on 16th June 1899 at Bradford, Yorkshire. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in July 1917 and was granted a commission on 8th November 1917. The date he was posted to 251 Squadron is not known. The injuries sustained on 13th September 1918 saw him hospitalised for some time and he relinquished his commission on the grounds of ill health on 19th November 1919. He died in December 1968 in Bradford.
