R.E.8 C2233 at Catterick aerodrome.

On 24th March 1918 the pilot of this No.52 Training Squadron aeroplane was being flown over Catterick aerodrome at low height when the pilot made a turn, he lost control and it spun into the ground. The pilot appears to have been very seriously injured and spent many months in hospital.

Pilot - 2Lt Robert Waugh RFC.


Robert Waugh was born on 9th September 1893 at Morpeth, Northumblerland and as a young man worked as a clerk for the North Eastern Railway in Newcastle. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in Summer 1917 and received a commission on 8th November 1917. He initially undertook flying training at No.68 Training Squadron at Bramham Moor before posting to No.52 Training Squadron at Catterick. He transferred to the RAF when it formed on 1st April 1918 but spent a long time in hospital, so much so that he never resumed flying training and was transferred to the Unemployed List on 15th April 1919.
