Airco DH.9 C1319 near Catterick.

On 21st August 1918 this No.49 Training Depot Station aeroplane was flown on a training flight in the area of Catterick aerodrome. At 19.50hrs and while flying at 500 feet above the ground the aeroplane stalled in a gliding turn. The pilot lost control and it spun into ground seriously injuring him and saw him admitted to the hospital at Catterick Camp.

Frederick Barlow was born on 23rd June 1899 in Lewisham. He initially served in and received a commision in the Prince Albert's (Somerset Light Infantry) but enlisted into the Royal Flying Corps in August 1917. In April 1918 he joined the RAF when it formed and the RFC folded. He was tried by Court Martial on 7th May 1918 and found guilty but what is not known. The injuries he sustained on 21st August 1918 saw him hospitalised for many months and he appears to have never returned to pilot training. He relinquished his commission on grounds of ill health on 9th March 1920. He died in May 1967 in Exeter.
