Sopwith 1F1 Camel B4619 at Beverley aerodrome.

During the afternoon of 20th July 1918 this No.72 Training Squadron aeroplane was flown on a formation flying exercise. On landing back at Beverley aerodrome at 14.30hrs the engine failed, the pilot lost control and the aeroplane came to rest upside down. He sustained injuries and was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary.

James Kearney was born on 17th February 1896 in Dublin, Ireland and had served in the Royal Irish Fusiliers, receiving a commission on 10th October 1914 prior to transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in late-1917. He was posted to No.72 Training Squadron just after the RAF formed in April 1918. Following the crash in July 1918 he appears to have spent some time recovering but was posted back to Beverley once out of hospital. He was posted to No.38 TDS at Tadcaster in February 1919 and was demobilized on 7th October 1919.
