On 27th February 1918 this RNAS Flying School aeroplane crashed at Redcar at noon. The pilot sustained serious head and leg injuried and sadly died. No further details are known. His service file gives the aircraft serial as being 3284.
Pilot - Probationary F/O Edward Phillips McIndoe RNAS, aged 18. Buried Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland.
Edward McIndoe was born on 4th November 1899 in Sunderland. He was still a student when he enlisted for RNAS service and was granted a commission on 28th October 1917. He was posted to RNAS Redcar for training on 8th December 1917. He was buried in Sunderland on 3rd March 1918 and is commemorated by a memorial and a stained glass window in St.George Presbyterian church, Sunderland.
Avro 504 N3285 was built by Humber Motor Cars Ltd for the RFC but was transferred to the RNAS and delivered to Redcar for assembly on 29th December 1917. It joined the RNAS Flying School and was destroyed as a result of the accident on 27th February 1918 that then saw it deleted from stock on 30th March 1918.
