Unidentified Avro 504 near Catterick.
On an unknown date in 1918 an Avro 504 came to rest on the Great North Road, near to Catterick aerodrome. From the photograph it would appear to have ran off an ajoining field and ended up on the road rather than force landing on the road itself. The only evidence I have come across that shows the incident exists is a photograph from an album belonging to an instructor at Catterick aerodrome who was there in Summer and Autumn 1918. The album has been copied and is shown on "archives.rcaf.museum" but the scanning resolution of all the photographs from this album is so poor it prevents the handwriting from being read and also the clearly visible aeroplane's serial number being read though it may end in "886". It is probably a No.49 Training Depot Station aeroplane as this was the unit based at Catterick at the time.
