Airco DH.4 A7636 (probably) near Catterick aerodrome.

Very little has been found about this incident. On 08.00hrs on 24th April 1918 this No.46 Training Squadron crashed during a training flight either at Catterick aerodrome or in the vacinity and the pilot sustained injuries. The accident card has no information as to what happened.

Pilot - Sgt James Chalmers Gillies RAF (99723). Injured.


James Gillies was born 18th September 1899 and was from Glasgow. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in Autumn 1917 and was postd to No.46 Training Squadron on 18th January 1918. The casualty Card for this incident states his rank of Acting Sgt but his service file states that he was commissioned to the rank of Flying Officer on 26th March 1918 while still in the Royal Flying Corps. He transferred to the RAF when it formed on 1st April 1918.
