R.E.8 A4487 at Catterick aerodrome.
On 3rd March 1918 this No.46 Training Squadron aeroplane took off from Catterick aerodrome but having climbed to 100ft the engine choked. The aeroplane then stalled and crashed. The pilot sustained injuries.
Pilot - 2Lt Alexander Martin RFC. Injured.
Alexander Martin was born on 26th May 1898 in Motherwell. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in July 1917 and begun flying training. He was posted to No.46 Training Squadron at Catterick on 2nd February 1918 though his service file gives a posting to Catterick Station on 3rd January 1918. Following injuries sustained on 3rd March 1918 he returned to Catterick and resumed flying training once fit, transferring to No.49 Training Depot Station when it formed in the Summer of 1918. On 22nd January 1919 he was placed on the Unemployed List.
