Avro 504b 9874 at Redcar aerodrome.

On 9th March 1918 this RNAS Flying School aeroplane was damaged in a crash at RNAS Redcar but details of how this occurred are not known. The pilot sustained head injuries. The pilot's service file gives the aeroplane as being "Avro 9814" but 9814 was a Porte Baby float plane not an Avro 504.

Pilot - Probationary F/O Harold Joseph Clark RNAS. Injured.

Harold Clark was born 9th March 1896 at Pickering, Ontario, Canada. He enlisted into the RNAS and was granted a commission on 5th October 1917. When he was posted to RNAS Redcar Flying School is not stated on his service records. Having sustained injuries on 9th March 1918 he was admitted to Haslar Hospital two weeks later. Long term, while he transferred to the RAF when it formed, his injuries must have seen him taken off flying duties and his commission was terminated on 9th October 1918.
Avro 504 9874 was built by George Parnall & Co. Ltd. at Bristol and was delivered to the A.A.P. at RNAS Killingholme for assembly on 1st January 1917. It remained there until being transferred to 'C' Flight at RNAS Cranwell on 9th May 1917 where it suffered two minor accidents on 7th July 1917 and on 22nd August 1917. The second incident required a repair in a factory. It was then ready for dispatch on 18th January 1918 and then issued to RNAS Redcar on 23rd February 1918 where it joined the RNAS Flying School. The damage at Redcar must have been more severe as it was not repaired and was deleted from stock on 30th March 1918.
