Stated to have been on 1st April 1917 this RNAS Flying School aeroplane crashed on landing at Redcar aerodrome.
Pilot - Name unknown.
Whilst I have no evidence that this incident did or did not occur on this date, I would offer information contained within "AIR1/312/15/226/198". This file contains daily report for RNAS Redcar through April 1917, for 1st April 1917 it lists all flights there after 16.00hrs on 31st March 1917 until the next daily report was made on 2nd April 1917. N5051 not listed as being flown on 1st April 1917 but is listed on that report as already having sustained damage in a landing accident. I would therefore suggest the landing accident occurred prior to 1st April 1917 but maybe only days earlier.
The history of the aircraft Longhorn N5051 was built by Brush E.E. Co. Ltd. at Loughborough and was delivered to CSD at White City from new. It was issued to RNAS Killingholme on 13th January 1917 and moved to RNAS Redcar on 14th March 1917 where it was used by the Flying School there. There is no record of it being repaired after the accident on 1st April 1917 but it but remained on charge with the unit for a further eight months prior to being finally assessed. It may have been repaired and then damaged again in a second incident but no information is known. It was deleted for use as spares on 14th December 1917.
