Avro 504 B906 near Catterick aerodrome.
On 6th November 1917 this No.6 Training Squadron was being flown in the Catterick area on a training flight when the engine began to misfire. The pilot attempted to make a turn downwind, the aeroplane stalled and it entered a spin. Being at low height the pilot was unable to bring the aeroplane back under control and it crashed at an angle of 45 degrees near the aerodrome. The pilot sustained injuries and was taken to Catterick Military Hospital.

Harry Popplewell was born on 12th March 1898 in York. He received a commission in the RFC in July 1917 and transferred to the RAF when it formed in April 1918. He was later placed on the Unemployed List in June 1919 and died in Newcastle in 1956.
