B.E.2e A8628 at Helperby aerodrome.
On the night of 21st / 22nd August 1917 the Zeppelin L.41 airship bombed the Hull area. It came inland at 12.03hrs over Tunstall and departed out to sea at 01.40hrs. No.33 Home Defence Squadron and No.76 Home Defence Squadron sent up aeroplanes to attempt to intercept the Zeppelin and B.E.2e A8628 was one of the No.76 Squadron aeroplanes. It appears to have taken off from Helperby at 01.20hrs but the cockpit lighting failed soon after so by 01.35hrs the pilot was already attempting to land at Helperby. Unfortunately the lack of cockpit lighting made the landing difficult and it crashed. The pilot's service record does not mention any injury occurred on this date so he probably escaped injury.
Pilot - 2Lt Edgar Dean Hall RFC.
