R.E.8 A4579 at Doncaster aerodrome.

On 11th July 1917 the pilot of this No.15 Training Squadron aeroplane made a bad landing on the aerodrome at Doncaster, the axle broke and the aeroplane flipped over. The pilot sustained injuries.

Pilot - 2Lt Walter George Woods RFC. Injured.

Exactly what happened to Walter Woods is unclear. He only appears to have been in the Royal Flying Corps for a short period of time. He received a commission on 13th April 1917 but the accident on 11th July 1917 appears to have had some baring on his service going forward. Given the aeroplane was only slightly damage his physical injuries must have been only slight. On 6th October 1917 his service file states that he "ceased to belong to the RFC" but was sent to the Ministry of Labour in August 1918. What he did in the months prior to this is not clear. He was eventually listed as being transferred to the RAF's Unemployed list in August 1919 (which may just have been the paperwork catching up).
