B.E.2e A1266 at Demesnes, Barnard Castle.

During the afternoon of 30th March 1917 this B.E.2e was being flown from the Glasgow area to the south when the pilot made a forced landing in the Demesnes area of Barnard Castle. The Teesdale Mercury newspaper mentioned the incident, stating it remained there overnight "under the shadow of the Spring Lodge walls". It was guarded overnight by members of the local volunteer force and took off at 10.30hrs on 31st March 1917. A photograph of the aeroplane in a field exists and it appears to show no damage. Demesnes and Spring Lodge is on the Durham side of the River Tees and openly, the possibilities for making landings at this side of the river in this area are far greater than across on the Yorkshire side. I have created this webpage until I come across information that proves it to be not in Yorkshire.
