B.E.2e 7226 near Copmanthorpe aerodrome.

On 19th October 1917 the pilot of this No.76 Home Defence Squadron, Royal Flying Corps aeroplane was undertaking a night flying exercise that included practicing making night landings. After taking off on one occasion at 18.40hrs the engine stopped at 300 feet above the ground. While it then restarted the pilot attempted to turn back toward the aerodrome at Copmanthorpe but entered a spin, he appears to have regained control but the engine then failed again and it crashed. The pilot received injuries and was taken to Fulford Hospital, York for treatment.
