Avro 504c 3306 at Redcar.

On 29th January 1917 this RNAS Flying School aeroplane was damaged at Redcar following a force-landing due to engine failure.

Pilot - Provisional F/O Augustus Conway Jones RNAS.


Augustus Jones was born on Portsea Island, Hampshire on 26th March 1893 and attended Taunton College between 1902 and 1908. He enlisted into the RNAS and was granted a commission on 17th October 1916, then trained at RNAS Redcar Flying School between 27th November 1916 and 10th February 1917. He was awarded a Royal Aero club Aviators' Certificate (Cert.No.4xx5) at Redcar on 27th December 1916. Following time at Redcar he was posted to Cranwell and then to France. On 27th June 1917 Flight Sub-Lieutenant Jones was killed serving with No.2 Squadron RNAS flying Airco DH-4 N5973 which crashed on landing in France. He is buried at Dunkirk Town Cemetery in France and was twenty three years old.
Avro 504 3306 was built by Brush EE Co Ltd of Loughbrough and was delivered to RNAS Redcar on 16th May 1916 where it served with the RNAS Flying School. It suffered accident damage on 3rd August 1916 and on 29th January 1917, after the first incident it was clearly repaired on site, after the second incident it was possibly repaired on site. On 21st August 1917 it underwent an inspection that saw it written off and whether this was to write it off following old damage sustained in January 1917 or as the result of a third mishap is unclear. It was deleted from stock on 8th September 1917.
