Avro 504c 1477 at Redcar aerodrome.

On 23rd January 1917 the undercarriage of this RNAS Flying School aeroplane collapsed on landing at Redcar aerodrome, damage was severe enough for it to be written off as a result of the damage some time later.

Pilot - Probationary F/O Howard Clayton Nutt RNAS.

Howard Nutt was born on 17th February 1898 in Pancras, London, in the 1901 census he is listed as living in the Barnet area. When he enlisted into the RNAS he was a member of the Cadet Corps at Kent College, he was subsequently granted a commission in the RNAS on 22nd October 1916. He trained at RNAS Redcar Flying School between 27th November 1916 and 3rd February 1917. He was then posted to RNAS Cranwell but on 5th April 1917 stated to his commanding officer that he wished to discontinue flying on account of his "nerves being shattered". His commission in the RNAS was terminated on 20th April 1917. Someone with the same name later served in the Tank Corps, British Army and is probably the same person. He married in 1920 in Edmonton, Middlesex and died in Salford in 1964.
Avro 504 1477 built by Brush E.E. Co. Ltd at Loughborough and was delivered to RNAS Redcar on 27th February 1916 where it was assembled, tested and accepted on 31th March 1916. It then joined the RNAS Flying School. Following the damage sustained at Redcar on 23rd January 1917 it appears to have been sat in an un-repaired state until finally being deleted from stock on 4th May 1917 having been deemed beyond economical repair. It is possible that it may have been considered for repair hence the time between accident and it being written off.
