B.E.2c 1118 near Crathorne.

On 24th May 1917 this aeroplane was due to be flown from the RNAS Home Defence Flight at RNAS Redcar to RNAS Cranwell but was forced to land at Crathorne for reasons unknown. It suffered repairable damage and after repair on site it returned to Redcar the next day. It finally made the flight to RNAS Cranwell on 26th May 1917.

Pilot - Acting Flt Cdr Reginald Marsh Everett RNAS.


Reginald Everett was born on 28th March 1889 in Ruislip. He enlisted for RNAS service on 12th February 1915 and was awarded his Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate (Cert.No.1186) on 21st April 1915 after training at RNAS Eastbourne. He served at RNAS Redcar from 14th December 1916 to 18th February 1918. He transferred to the newly created RAF in April 1918. Captain (Acting Major) Everett was awarded the OBE (Military Division) in June 1919 but transferred to the Unemployed List on 11th October 1919. He died in 1953.
B.E.2c 1118 was built by Beardmore & Co. at Dalmuir and was delivered to RNAS Redcar on 15th September 1915 where it joined the Home Defence Flight. It was transferred to RNAS Scarborough Home Defence Flight on 8th November 1915, the returned to RNAS Redcar Home Defence Flight on 11th November 1915. It went back to RNAS Scarborough Home Defence Flight on 8th December 1915 before going north to RNAS Whitley Bay Home Defence Flight on 13th December 1915. It returned to RNAS Redcar Home Defence Flight at some stage during January 1916 and stayed there for some months. It was due to be transferred to RNAS Cranwell when force landed at Crathorne on 24th May 1917. Once at RNAS Cranwell it suffered another mishap on 2nd October 1917 and was repaired. It was still on charge at RNAS Cranwell when the RNAS folded and became the RAF on 1st April 1918. After this nothing more is known of the aeroplane.
