Bleriot XI-2 3947 at Redcar.

On 21st November 1916 this RNAS Flying School aeroplane crashed at Redcar damaging the fuselage. If the information is correct then this was the pilot's second crash of the day and Redcar's fourth of the day.

Pilot - FSL Norman Black RNAS.


Norman Black was born on 21st October 1897 and enlisted into the RNAS on 28th June 1916. He learned to fly with the RNAS Flying School at Redcar, being posted there on 26th August 1916 and being awarded his Flying Certificate on 22nd November 1916 (Cert. No. 3872). He was then posted to RNAS Cranwell until May 1917 then served as an instructor at Vindome, France. On 11th October 1917 he was seriously injured when 9 Naval Squadron Sopwith Camel S6358 crashed behind enemy lines. He died of his wounds the following day as prisoner of war. He is buried at Larchwood Cemetery, Belgium and was nineteen years old.


Bleriot XI-2 3947 was built by Bleriot of Paris and was supplied to the RFC as either 2852 or 2853. It arrived at the Central Supply Depot on 21st January 1916 where it stayed until being issued to RNAS Home Defence Flight, Scarborough on 16th May 1916. It was later transferred to RNAS Redcar Home Defence Flight on 8th July 1916 but then switched to the RNAS Flying School. It was damaged at Redcar on 21st November 1916. It was probably considered for repair but was later assessed and deleted as deemed beyond economic repair on 4th May 1917.
