Avro 504 1486 at Redcar.

On 16th April 1916 this aeroplane crashed on landing at Redcar aerodrome during a flight with the RNAS Flying School and was slightly damaged.

Pilot - FSL Walter Edward Traynor RNAS.


Walter Traynor was born on 31st January 1894 in London. He enlisted into the RNAS on 2nd October 1915 and was initially posted to RNAS Eastchurch, then to RNAS Killingholme on 20th October 1915 where he flew as a passenger several times but owing to there being no dual control aeroplanes to train him never flew solo. He was then posted to the RNAS Flying School on 15th February 1916 and after training to fly was awarded a Royal Aero Club aviators' certificate on 17th March 1916 (Cert.No.2589). He was later posted to 3 Naval Squadron and served in France. F/Lt Traynor was killed on 2nd February 1917 and is buried Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, France. He was twenty three years old.


Avro 504 1486 was built by Brush EE Co. Ltd. of Loughborough and was delivered to RNAS Redcar on 13th March 1916, it was tested and accepted there on 31st March 1916. It appears to have served with the RNAS Flying School throughout it's service. Following damage sustained on 16th April 1916 and 29th October 1916 it was repaired but a third incident on 24th January 1917 saw it written off. It was finally deleted from stock on 14th February 1917.
