B.E.2c 1120 near Scarborough.

On 14th January 1916 this RNAS Home Defence Flight aeroplane was damaged following a forced landing on land to the north of the aerodrome at Scarborough, the pilot was unhurt and the aircraft was recovered to Scarborough for repair.

Pilot - Acting F/Lt Alfred Sebastian Goodwin RNAS.


Alfred Sebastian Goodwin was born on 7th October 1877 in London. He was awarded a Royal Aero Club aviator's certificate on 5th April 1915 (Cert.No.1156) at the London and Provincial School, Hendon and entered the RNAS on 5th August 1915 as an Acting Flight Lieutenant. He had already served in the RNVR as an engineering officer (possibly at Barrow and Luce Bay). In 1917 he graduated as an Airship pilot. He survived the Great War and joined the RAF Technical Branch in July 1918. By 1922 he was serving in India, he transferred to the Reserve in July 1923 and relinquished his commission on the grounds of ill health on 22nd September 1926.
B.E.2c 1120 was built by Beardmore & Co. at Dalmuir and was delivered to RNAS Redcar on 15th September 1915 where it probably served with the Home Defence Flight, it was then transferred to RNAS Home Defence Flight at Scarborough on 22nd September 1915. It suffered repairable damage at Scarborough on 14th January 1916. It later suffered a more serious flying accident on 30th August 1916 and was deleted on 22nd September 1916.
