Be2a 230 near Hutton Conyers.
During the morning of Friday, 23rd January 1914 an aeroplane of 2 Squadron RFC took off from Montrose at 08.15rs to fly the long flight to Farnborough. It appears that he had just received a posting away from 2 Squadron to command his own unit. Had he been successful in flying from Montrose to Farnborough (Netheravon) this would have been a record in terms of distance flying in the UK for the time. Shortly before 13.00hrs and while in the Ripon area the aeroplane suffered engine trouble so was force landed in a large field near Hutton Conyers, next to the road from Ripon to Wath. An inspection of the engine found that the big end baring had failed. A team of mechanics later arrived and repairs were carried out on site. The pilot later resumed the flight at around 09.00hrs on Monday, 26th January 1914 and reached Farnborough that day. He then travelled by train back to Montrose on Tuesday, 27th January 1914.
Pilot - Cpt John Harold Whitworth Becke RFC.
