Stedman TS-1 BGA.213 "City of Leeds" glider at Sutton Bank.

Between Saturday, 24th August 1935 and Sunday, 1st September 1935 a national gliding competition was held at the Sutton Bank gliding site, the home of the Yorkshire Gliding Club. Many thousands of visitors attended the week-long event. On Tuesday, 27th August 1935 the Stedman two-seat glider was given the tail number "23", its builder and pilot, Rex Stedman, spent the day giving visitors to the competition passenger flights. His last flight of the took launched at 18.51hrs. At 19.07hrs and with a passenger on board, the pilot was attempting a landing at Sutton Bank when the glider appears to have undershot and come down into the field used as a carpark for the competition. In trying to avoid hitting parked cars the pilot turned but the glider struck a wall. Even though he had dived to the ground to avoid being hit by a wing, a young bystander; a son of an Essex Gliding Club member, sustained minor back injuries.
