Stedman TS-1 BGA.213 "City of Leeds" glider at Sutton Bank.

On 7th June 1936 this two seater glider was flown three times at a flying meeting of the Yorkshire Gliding Club at Sutton Bank giving dual instruction flying training by the owner and constructor Rex Stedman. It was flown again the following weekend on 13th June 1936.

Many years ago I was given information that on 7th June 1936 the Stedman glider ascended to around 950 feet above the ground successfully. On conclusion of the flight the pilot made an approach to land at Sutton Bank but noticed that spectators were obstructing the landing, he attempted to lift the glider over them but the glider stalled and it crashed into bushes on the edge of the landing site. The glider was constructed by the pilot, it sustained minor damage. This damage is not stated in the club report for June 1936 printed in the Sailplane and Glider magazine which was generally very good at mentioning damage incident leaving me to question the date given.

Pilot - Mr Reginald Frederick Stephen Stedman, of Leeds.

Passenger - Mr John Sparkes, of Halifax.
