(Probably) Scud II BGA.200 glider near Kilburn (?).

Between 1st and 9th September 1934 a national glider "derby" meeting was held at Sutton Bank and was arranged by the British Gliding Association. Some fifty pilots had agreed to take part in contests for soaring, distance, altitude, duration and other flying with between three and four thousand spectators travelling to Sutton Bank to watch by the second day. During the event a number of gliders were damaged in mishaps. This incident is not mentioned in the British Gliding Association magazine's report of the whole event but the damage is mentioned in newspaper reports from 3rd September 1934 mentioning the events for the previous day. On 2nd September 1934 this pilot attempted to soar in the area south of the Hambleton Hills but there was not sufficient wind so he was compelled to land in a field south of Sutton Bank. Unfortunately the glider received minor damage in landing in a hay crop. If this landing was made just south of the gliding site it would have been made near Kilburn but I am lacking this information. The BGA magazine lists all the flights made on this date, F/Lt Buxton made two flights in the "London club's Scud", which was infact probably his own Scud. The London Gliding Club did not own any of the gliders they brought to this meeting, instead club members brought their own gliders. Because very minor damage could have been repaired on site very quickly and the way the newspaper report was worded, it appears that this incident took place during his first flight of the day in the "London Scud". His first flight took place between 13.03hrs and 13.10hrs, the Scud was flown by a different pilot beteeen 16.04hrs and 16.21hrs and the F/Lt Buxton flew it again between 17.13hrs until 17.36hrs.

The identity of this glider was probably Scud II BGA.200 because F/Lt Buxton owned it.

Pilot - F/Lt Geoffrey Mungo Buxton RAF. Of London Gliding Club.
