Scud II BGA.193 glider damaged at Sutton Bank.
Between 1st and 9th September 1934 a national glider "derby" meeting was held at Sutton Bank and was arranged by the British Gliding Association. Some fifty pilots had agreed to take part in contests for soaring, distance, altitude, duration and other flying with between three and four thousand spectators travelling to Sutton Bank to watch by the second day. On Sunday, 2nd September 1934 this glider launched from Sutton Bank at 15.18hrs and was flown successfully. The approach to land on the gliding site was affected a cross wind, a large crowd was present across the field and some of the crowd had spilled over onto where the gliders were landing. The wind combined with people being in the way for the approach the pilot was making made the landing difficult. By the time the pilot realised this, the glider was too low to overfly the crowd. At 15.23hrs the pilot turned the glider sharply to avoid the crowd but the right wing caught the ground and it came to rest with the undercarriage and cockpit slightly damaged. The pilot was uninjured. The glider was transported to Abbott-Baynes Sailplanes at Farnham, Surrey for repair and was returned to Sutton Bank within a week.
Pilot - Mrs Kathleen Isabella Mackie, of Ulster Gliding Club.
Mrs Mackie and her husband were both founder members of the Ulster Gliding Club. They owned a glider which appears to have been Kassel 25 BGA.168 (2) however there is no record that this was the glider transported to Sutton Bank and damaged there on 3rd September 1934, though it may well have been. The club did however bring a new Grunau Baby, a Scud and hybrid Kassel 20 / 25 made from two gliders.
