Crested "Red" Wren BGA.178 glider at Sutton Bank.

Between 1st and 9th September 1934 a national glider "derby" meeting was held at Sutton Bank and was arranged by the British Gliding Association. Some fifty pilots had agreed to take part in contests for soaring, distance, altitude, duration and other flying with between three and four thousand spectators travelling to Sutton Bank to watch by the second day. Over the course of the week a number of gliders were damaged in mishaps. On Sunday, 2nd September 1934 launches were mainly carried out off the western slope at the gliding site. A London Gliding Club member attempted a flight at 13.35hrs but three minutes later the pilot attempted to land, the landing was made difficult in a crosswind and the glider came to rest having broken off a skid. Fred Slingsby took the glider for repair and it was back in use five days later.

Pilot - Mr Sebert Humphries. London Gliding Club.
