Grunau Baby BGA.148 glider near Sutton Bank.

Between 1st and 9th September 1934 a national glider "derby" meeting was held at Sutton Bank and was arranged by the British Gliding Association. Some fifty pilots had agreed to take part in contests for soaring, distance, altitude, duration and other flying with between three and four thousand spectators travelling to Sutton Bank to watch by the second day. Over the course of the week a number of gliders were damaged in mishaps. On Saturday, 1st September 1934 there was little wind until the evening. At 18.32hrs this glider managed to take off and managed a five minute flight but lost height that saw the glider be landed in a field below the gliding site. Unfortunately the glider struck a tree and received minor damage. Fred Slingsby took the glider to his workshop and repaired it within a week.

Pilot - Mr William Liddell. Of Ulster Gliding Club.
