Unidentified Hols der Teufel glider at Sutton Bank.

Between 2nd and 15th August 1936 a training camp was held at Sutton Bank by the Yorkshire Gliding Club and over the course of the event some twenty nine gliding certificated were issued. During the afternoon of Saturday, 15th August 1936 the pilot of this glider was undertaking a flight that if successful may have seen him awarded his C-Class flying licence. While flying at around 200 feet above the ground the glider stalled, lost height and before the pilot could regain full control it struck a car and caravan trailer parked on the edge of the landing ground at Sutton Bank. Mrs Stedman, wife of club pilot Rex Stedman, had a narrow escape as she was stood next to the car at the time. Their family car and caravan were damaged. The Yorkshire Gliding Club owned two Hols gliders on this date, BGA.191 and BGA.252, but which one was damaged on this date is not clear.

Pilot - Mr Newsome Henry Clough, of Brentwood, Essex.

Newsome Clough was born on 26th January 1898 at Cleckheaton, Yorkshire and served in the Navy in the First World War. He later learnt to fly powered aircraft and was awarded a Royal Aero Club aviator's certificate (Cert.No.17665) on 7th April 1939 following training at the Romford Flying School. He worked for the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Co. becoming Chief of the Navigational Aids Group. He later worked for the Radio Corporation of America. There is no death in England or Wales that fits for him suggesting he died in Scotland or, more probably, overseas.
