Schleicher ASW19b BGA-3752 glider near Sutton Bank.

On 2nd October 2006 this glider was in collision with another glider BGA-2093 at 1500ft just north of the Yorkshire Gliding Club site at Sutton Bank and close to a bank of cloud. Both gliders collided almost head on and a wing of each glider broke away. Sadly the pilot of this glider was killed when the glider crashed into a field near the bottom of Sutton Bank. The AAIB investigation found that a GPS receiver had been mounted on the canopy of this glider and along with its linked wiring that had been cable-tied in place, this prevented the canopy from being jettisoned should the need arise. The pilot was unable to get out of the aircraft.

Pilot - Mr Peter Heywood, aged 48. Killed.
