On 6th August 1990 and while soaring with a pupil to 3000 feet the pilot noticed that a heavy squall was approaching the airfield so decided to land before it arrived. After experiencing some trouble loosing height, the squall beat him to the airfield and the severe sink combined with "curl-over" from the hillside resulted in him landing short in a field near Sutton Bank at 16.15hrs. the glider was damaged though both people on board were uninjured. At the time of this incident the glider was registered to the Yorkshire Gliding Club and based at Sutton Bank. It was later registered as G-DEPD on the civilian register.
