Swales SD3-15V BGA.2072 at Sutton Bank.

At 14.45hrs on Sunday, 22nd June 1980 this glider was seen flying at between 400 and 500 feet near Sutton Bank gliding site and flying fairly slow. The pilot made a turn and the glider developed into a spin. Control was lost and it spun into trees on the gliding site boundary. The pilot, who was from Bradford, was badly injured and died a short time later.

Pilot - Mr Richard Zucker. Aged 50. Died of injuries. Burial location unknown.


Swales Sailplanes were a small company based at Long Street, Thirsk in the late 1970s and in 1980. They were manufacturers of the SD-series custom-built gliders and they also undertook repairs to metal gliders and light aircraft.
