Slingsby T.59D Kestrel BGA.1984 near Sutton Bank.

During the evening of Sunday, 16th August 1987 this glider was involved in a mid-air collision with glider BGA.3202 over the Sutton Bank gliding site when both gliders were coming into land and flying into a setting sun. Both gliders were seen to fall from around 600 feet above a ridge near the airfield. Sadly both pilots were killed when the gliders hit the ground. One may have crashed on the A170 road while one crashed into trees and broke up.

Pilot - Mr Richard Corner Stoddart. Aged 59. Killed. Burial location unknown.


This glider was registered to Richard Stoddart and he based it at Sutton Bank. He was born on 14th June 1928 and lived at South Gables, High Shincliffe, Durham.
