Very little is known about wireless operator of Lancaster DS832 a Sgt William Henry Poole. Through correspondance with the daughter of one of the other members of his crew she believed that his name was "Reg" and another member of his crew, Joe Higgs, referred to him as "Red" Poole. The confusion between "Reg" and "Red" may have resulted. Sgt Poole left Lancaster DS832 facing the wrong way and hit his neck on the edge of the escape hatch which seriously injured and stunned him, F/Lt Allen was next out of the aircraft and dived towards him and released his parachute before releasing his own and both men then landed safely. In the navigator's account of this incident Sgt Poole is mentioned as sustaining serious injuries, his throat had been very badly damaged and he remained in hospital for the rest of the war. He did not fly again.
