Auster Mk.III MZ228 in the Robin Hoods Bay area.

Between 14th and 16th July 1943 "A-Flight" of 657 Squadron undertook a detachment to the Hackness area so that they could undertake training exercises on the Fylingdales Ranges. The squadron was an artillery spotting unit so would have been flying over the range while ground units undertook the firing exercises. The weather over the course of the three days was poor. At 10.44hrs on 15th July 1943 657 Squadron Auster MZ228 took off from Clifton to fly toward where the ranges were. Almost certainly owing to poor weather the pilot made a forced landing in the general Robin Hoods Bay area at "Y.42" at 11.32hrs. The aircraft was undamaged and took off again at 14.10hrs and headed back toward Clifton, where the squadron was based.
