Piper PA-23-250 Aztec G-BOST near Riplingham.

This aircraft was registered to Boston Deep Sea Fisheries Ltd, of Hull but was operated by N.P.D.Aviation Ltd, a subsidiary company of Northern Pig Developments, of Beeford, on the date of this accident. During the morning of Wednesday, 21st January 1981 it was planned that the aircraft would be used to fly several passengers from Carnaby airfield to Aberdeen on business. A take off time from Carnaby of 10.30hrs was arranged the previous day and the pilot of the aircraft would need to fly it from Brough to Carnaby in advance of this time from where it had been parked overnight. The pilot arrived at Brough prior to the flight and had the aircraft fuelled. He discussed the poor weather and visibilty in the area, and for the flight and route he would take to reach Carnaby. At 10.17hrs the aircraft took off from Brough. It was seen to climb away and make a turn to the north but was then lost to sight in low cloud. Three minutes later it flew into high ground near Fox Covert Farm, half a mile west of Riplingham, on the southern edge of the Yorkshire Wolds. The aircraft was badly damaged and the pilot was killed. It was not known why the pilot had attempted to fly direct from Brough to Carnaby, a route which would have taken him over the Wolds, when he had discussed flying a route along the coast prior to taking off.
