Auster 5 G-ANIK at Guiseley.

During the afternoon of Sunday, 4th March 1962 the eventual pilot and young son of this aircraft travelled from Shipley to Yeadon aerodrome with the pilot's daughter who were all intended on flying. The pilot's daughter was with them but offered her seat to another girl to have a flight so that when it then took off there was the pilot, his son and an unrelated girl as a third passenger. The aircraft took off from Yeadon at around 15.40hrs but the weather soon after taking off is stated in newspaper reports as being a snowstorm. The pilot had sent a radio message back to the aerodrome stating that he was returning to land as the weather had deteriorated. The aircraft flew into a snowstorm, lost height and struck a chimney of a house on No.34 Granville Terrace, Moor Lane, Guiseley. It then crashed into a garden area at the side of the terrace and all three occupants of the aircraft were killed. The occupants of the house were uninjured, one of which, Miss Peggy Jennings, was interviewed by a newspaper who stated she was sitting in front of a fireplace when debris and soot came down the chimney, which would suggest little other damage to the house occurred. Photographs of the crashed aeroplane exist and using them it can be worked out that the crash site appears now to underneath Kingfield, an access road to properties up the hill from the crash site. The chimney of the house the aircraft apparently hit shows no obvious sign of damage or repair. The aircraft was owned by the Yorkshire Territorial Flying Group.
