Meteor F.4 EE525 near Fraisthorpe.

On 12th April 1954 this 207 Advanced Flying School aircraft was being flown on a training exercise that took the pilot over the North Sea, off the Yorkshire coastline. Exactly what happened is unclear but during the flight the pilot lost control in cloud some eight miles off the Yorkshire coast. He abandoned the aircraft and descended by parachute but fell into the sea and was drowned. The aircraft flew west and crashed on land west of Fraisthorpe. Newspaper reports gave the crash location as being farmland between South Kingsfield Farm and Demming Farm, with pieces falling in a flock of sheep. One sheep was killed.

The pilot was listed as missing for several months and despite extensive searches being carried out in the days after the incident nothing was found. It wasn't until mid-August 1954 when an inquest was held on his death which was probably a short time after his body was finally recovered. Part of the inquest was recorded in local newspapers which added far more information than that given at the time of the incident. One pilot of the same training unit stated that he saw a parachute with an airman at around 15,000 feet but was ordered to return to base owing to fuel shortage. Another pilot climbed to 11,000 feet and spotted the parachutist descending, it was seen drifting out to sea and the other aircraft orbitted it as it fell into the sea. Owing to the way it was descending this airman assumed that the pilot was not conscious at that time.
