Meteor T.7 WH167 near Fangfoss.

On 13th May 1952 this 207 Advanced Flying School aircraft was initially flown by a pupil pilot with an instructor assessing him on his flying abilities. Together they undertook a night circuits and landings training exercise using Full Sutton airfield. Such an exercise was very common and made prior to a pupil pilot being assessed as capable to fly the aircraft solo at night. The instructor in this instance appears to have been F/Lt Robert Hugh Payne. After around six basic circuits and landings the instructor deemed the pupil as being capable so then left the aircraft and briefed the pupil to carry out further circuits and landings flying solo. A short time later the pupil took off from Full Sutton airfield for what was his first solo in a Meteor at night. It began to climb away but a yellow flame was seen to come from the starboard engine and it then flew into the ground around half a mile from the end of the runway near Fangfoss Grange. The aircraft broke up and the pilot was killed.
