Meteor F.4 VT326 near Settrington.
On 4th March 1952 the pilot of this No.203 Advanced Flying School aircraft was undertaking a low-level training flight when it flew into the ground between Settrington and Scagglethorpe, to the east of Malton. Witnesses to the crash had seen it fly from the direction of the wolds at low level but it then began a descent that followed the contour down the hillside toward the farmland at lower level. Instead of then pulling out of the shallow dive it then simply flew into the ground on or close to a hedge. The pilot was killed and wreckage was spread over an area of three hundred yards on land farmed by Mr Raymond Wardell. A local lady, Mrs Corner, raised the alarm, with the police and other services being soon on the scene.
