Meteor F.4 VT176 near Little Driffield.

On 21st May 1952 the pilot of this 203 Advanced Flying School aircraft was detailed to undertake his first solo night flying exercise in a Meteor. He took off from Driffield airfield at 23.36hrs and was due to undertake a circuits and landings training exercise. After becoming airborne the aircraft began to climb away normally to the north of the airfield and reached around 500 feet above the ground. The aircraft then made a turn to port but this became a descending turn and it eventually flew into the ground around two miles north of the airfield. The crash saw the aircraft disintergrate and the pilot was killed.
