Vampire FB.5 VZ300 near Skipsea.

On 13th October 1950 this Central Gunnery School aircraft was flown on a low level live firing training exercise at the range at Skipsea. Each pass of the range saw the pilot fly west to east firing on a target that was on the coast and that he would then overfly the target out to sea, turn and fly around for another pass. After making one pass it began to circle back to the west to begin another pass. Unfortunately as it flew westward it was much too close to the range, the pilot then attempted a very tight turn to attempt to get on the correct firing line but owing to the tightness of the tuen the aircraft stalled. Owing to height at which it was flying there was not enough height to regain control and it spun into the ground killing the pilot.
