Meteor F.4 VW292 near Little Driffield.

During the afternoon of Thursday, 28th September 1950 this No.203 Advanced Flying School aircraft was one of three that took off from Driffield airfield to undertake at training exercise that involved practicing flying in formation. The pilot of this aircraft was a flying instructor and the pilots of the other two were pupils, one of which was Sgt Gordon Stent. The formation made toward the coast and flew information from the Hull area up to Scarborough before turning inland with the intention of landing at Driffield one after another. During the later stages of the flight the instructor noticed that an engine fire warning light had come on in the cockpit so shut the suspected faulty engine and made an approach to land on one engine. As he approached Driffield the pilot probably thought the aircraft was going to undershoot to applied power to the working engine, he then appeared to lose control, it turned to port, the port wing dropped behind a line of trees and it cartwheeled into fields. The pilot was killed. At the inquest it was stated that there was no engine fire which suggests the warning light had either come on in error or the pilot mistook that light for another cockpit light. An investigation found that the dive brakes had been left out and when the speed fell below critical it began to stall.
