On the night of 2nd / 3rd August 1943 the crew of this aircraft were to undertake an operational to bomb Hamburg and left base of Elvington at 23.51hrs. Outbound, but over occupied Europe, the aircraft began to icing up with the effects of the icing on the flying surfaces the aircraft began to loose height, the crew jettisoned the bomb load and plotted a course for home. The aircraft was then slightly damaged by flak bursts but despite the damage the crew were able to return to base and landed at Elvington at around 05.00hrs.

On 29th January 1944 the commissioned James Webster, F/Sgt Lewis, WO Morrison and Garner were flying Halifax LK729 on Ops to Berlin with 77 Squadron when the aircraft would appear to have crashed in the region of the target area. Sgt Garner survived to become a PoW, he was the only survivor of the then crew. P/O Webster was thirty three years old and F/Sgt Lewis was twenty two years old, and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. WO Morrison was twenty one years old and is buried in Berlin War Cemetery.
